Review: Tyla’s “Art” Album

A Proud South African Perspective

As I finally took the time to dive into Tyla’s latest album, “Art,” I found myself pleasantly surprised. With a runtime of 38 minutes and 14 seconds, it’s a compact journey that left a mark on me. Coming off her Grammy win, Tyla is showcasing something special to the world, and I believe this album will propel her even further internationally.

One thing that immediately struck me was the fusion of amapiano and R&B throughout the album. It’s a refreshing blend that adds depth and diversity to the tracks. Tyla’s vocal prowess shines through each song, leaving no doubt about her capabilities as an artist. As a South African, it fills me with pride to see her flying the flag high on the global stage.

The album’s first, “Water,” serves as a cornerstone, and I appreciated how the rest of the album maintains that vibe while exploring different aspects. It’s like a “watered” down version of the hit single, but in the best way possible. I can’t help but wonder what a live performance of this album would look like. It would be interesting  to see how Tyla could keep the energy flowing without relying solely on dance.

The collaborations on the album, particularly with Tems, Becky G and Travis Scott, add a special touch that elevates the overall experience. Each feature brings a unique flavor to the tracks, enhancing the listening journey.

Overall, before I nitpick or criticize, I have to say, well done, Tyla. I wish you all the success with this album. It’s a testament to your talent and artistry, and I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next.
